Every year KUSD #20 holds a Mental Math competition. The purpose of the competition is to generate student enthusiasm for achievement in math. Our goal is to make every participating student and school feel successful and proud of the growth they have achieved this year in math skills and problem solving. We hope that the competition will encourage teachers and students to focus more time on developing mental calculation skills and problem solving. |
Each school has a Mental Math Coordinator who is responsible for the Mental Math teams. The teams consist of two representatives from each of the grade levels, 1st through 6th. There is a separate competition for each grade level, each participant receives a ribbon, and there are medals for first, second, and third place. Each school will hold “Building competitions” to determine who will proceed to the “District competition.” |
The competition also has a problem solving portion that consists of five students from each school. The teachers may recommend a student from their class, or the coordinator may choose a student. However, each team must have one 4th grader, one 5th grader, and one 6th grader; the remaining two members can be 4th, 5th or 6th grade students. All participants will receive a certificate and a traveling trophy will be awarded to the school represented by the winning team. |
